Статьи по английскому - A perfect teacher

There are, of course, truly artful teachers and brilliant students. Perhaps some day we will understands their skills and talents and how they acquired them, so that we can systematically produce more of them. At present, however, they are true exceptions that defy specification. We simply do not know what makes an artful teacher.

I don’t agree with the fact that artful teachers are true exceptions nowadays. There are quite a number of knowledgeable professionals in our country who really like what they do. And due to their work the system of our education is considered to be the best one in the world.
To my mind there aren’t any bad teachers at all. Of course you may object and start giving examples from your personal experience and you will be absolutely right. Most of us have had at least one really great teacher and one with whom we couldn’t find the common language. We all know what qualities we like and expect in a teacher and judge every representative of this profession being guided by our personal criteria. But we’re all complete individuals and our tastes differ greatly. One and the same teacher may be considered the best one for one pupil and the worst one for another. We all know such an English proverb as “So many men, so many minds”. Applying to our situation we can say: “So many pupils, so many opinions”. It happens so because we have dissimilar personalities and prefer different learning styles.
But all truly artful teachers who are really devoted to their profession have a few things in common that we all like.
The first thing is the thorough knowledge of the subject. You can not teach the things you don’t know yourself. You should know what you’re talking about. A good teacher is an erudite person. But it doesn’t mean that good teachers need to know everything. They should just be knowledgeable enough to be creditable and for the most part accurate.
Good teachers should be honest. Honest enough to be able to admit that sometimes they don't know the answer to a specific question and honest enough to look into it and then get back to the student. A good teacher should be honest enough to admit being incorrect. If she/he makes a mistake or imparts false information she/he should be able to admit that the mistake or error was made. Everyone makes mistakes at some point but what makes others trust your words is the ability to admit you were wrong and correct your mistakes. Correcting errors is a part of learning and teaching.
A good teacher should be tolerant respecting each student as an individual. Each person is unique. Differences of opinion, attitude and personality should be celebrated. The classroom is not a place to squash the individual. It is a place to enlighten and open the mind. The students’ individuality shouldn’t be squelched just because the teacher thinks one way and the student thinks another. Teaching is not brainwashing.
A good teacher should be patient and flexible. Not everyone learns at the same pace or in the same way. There are students who understand everything quickly, there are some who need more time and there are those who may never understand at all. A good teacher knows that sometimes you have to slow the pace down for those who don't quite understand yet and try to keep it interesting enough for those who already do.
A teacher can and should have a personal relationship with each student. But there is no excuse for soliciting, pressuring, intimidating or threatening. Being a teacher is being in a position of some power and misusing that power is one of the most dangerous and detrimental things a teacher can do to a student.
To be a good teacher you need some of the gifts of a good actor. You must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience. You must be a clear speaker with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control and you must be able to act what you are teaching in order to make its meaning clear. A good teacher should be able to make his or her audience take an active part in his play. Students can ask and get answers to their questions.
It is important for a good teacher to have some information about teaching techniques. But at the same time he/ she must be sensible and attentive to his/ her pupils and be able to find the right approach to them.
A good teacher has his feelings under control. So when he/ she is in a bad temper he/ she must not be rude to his/ her pupils, when he/ she is sad he/ she must not show it to them. In other words he/ she must act all the time to be a good teacher.
